The Story Behind New Mercy Quilt

It's been a month since my quilt New Mercy was released. It was such a joy to show it all to you! I really hope you've enjoyed the pattern and various color ways as I have. If you missed the release, the pattern can be purchased here.

New Mercy Quilt

I started designing this quilt in the later winter of 2022. I had some downtime while my son was taking an evening kids acting class, and I spent the time doodling on graph paper instead of doing more important things! Drawing designs with straight lines, trying out different colors, was quite cathartic.

It takes some courage, but I want to share my story with you.
A little over a year ago, I was diagnosed with having a rare type of malignant tumor. After multiple surgeries and treatment, I found myself well (praise the Lord!) but still emotionally fragile. It had been a dream of mine for years to somehow own a quilt shop. I remember sitting at my sewing machine and the thought that I'd never be able own a small business (without the necessary health insurance) stopped me in my tracks.

Ever have one of those life changing moments?

I had been listening to the Craft to Career podcast and decided I could start an online quilt shop and still continue working as a public school teacher daily.
After that decision, I started designing this quilt. The name New Mercy comes from the hymn “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” This is a testimony to God's faithfulness to me not only during cancer treatments, but through daily trials as well. Do I need grace for my parenting? Yep. Do I need grace for my thoughts or words? Yep. Yet God provides new mercies for us every day. I hope you find new mercies for your life as well.
