How to Make Fabric Valentine Cones

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and what better way to decorate than with handmade fabric Valentine cones? Similar decorations are sold in stores, but you can easily make your own with just a few supplies! This DIY project is quick, affordable, and adds a cozy, handmade touch to your home decor. Plus, it makes a great gift!

I’ve seen other tutorials on how to make fabric rope, and it requires you to twist and twist and TWIST the fabric. I thought “there has to be a faster and easier way to do this!” I searched for an automatic hair braider, and found my answer! This tool makes it so easy to twist fabric- just insert fabric and push a button!

Supplies Needed:

  • Various sizes of styrofoam cones
  • Straight pins with small heads
  • Fabric strips cut to 0.5" x WOF (Width of Fabric)
  • Automatic hair braider/twister that can be bought here.

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Fabric Strips
  • Cut fabric strips to be 0.5" x WOF.
  • Select fabrics in different colors to create a variegated or patterned effect.

  1. Twist the Fabric into Rope
  • Take two fabric strips and insert one end into the automatic hair braider. If you are using a fabric with a pattern on it, I found it best to fold the fabric in half lengthwise with WST before inserting it into the hair braider. This ensured that the fabric would twist with the right side facing out.
  • Secure the other ends to something stable (a couch cushion works great) or have someone hold them.
  • Turn on the hair braider to twist each strip separately, then twist them together to create a fabric rope.
  • Remove the twisted rope from the hair braider and pin both ends to prevent unraveling.

  1. Wrap the Styrofoam Cone
  • Pin one end of the fabric rope to the base of the styrofoam cone.
  • Begin wrapping the fabric rope around the cone, working your way up. I liked my rope to be tightly wrapped together.
  • Unpin the other end as you continue wrapping until the entire fabric rope is used.
  • Secure the end with a pin.
  • Repeat these steps, making and wrapping additional fabric rope, until the entire cone is covered.

  1. Get Creative!
  • Use different colors of fabric to create striped patterns or a color-blocked effect.
  • Experiment with different fabric textures for a unique look.
  • Arrange multiple cones together for a beautiful centerpiece or mantel display.
  • Add little decorations to the cones to create a fun look.

Final Touches

Once your Valentine cones are complete, display them on shelves, tables, or mantels. You can also gift them to friends and loved ones for a heartfelt, handmade Valentine’s Day surprise!

This project is an easy, fun, and budget-friendly way to add a festive touch to your home. Happy crafting!
